Scales gifted to them by one god and a purpose given by another, merfolk are a species of mortals born from destruction.
Merfolk
Birthed from the Sea
After the war, the god crowned to rule over the ocean was the Kraken. A massive god that had influence over the seas of every realm, the Kraken kept most people in isolation, unable to reach other parts of land in their own realms, let alone the Realm Gates. The Kraken caused havoc through all the oceans, only allowing the pirates that worshipped him to use them. These pirates would be led by merfolk - those devoted to the Kraken.
Life was not easy for the merfolk that did not follow the Kraken; they sought refuge with titans of the sea who could protect them. Refuge can only save you for so long - the other merfolk banded together and killed the Kraken and many of the merfolk who followed him. This act had not been seen as a group of mortals killing a god; this act called Athear themselves down from the isles. An agreement was made and now the title of Water God is shared between the titans who protected the merfolk.
Ancient Mortals
Merfolk have a long and rich history, existing for so long, they’ve kept documents that show their evolutionary history. Merfolk have not always been amphibious; the ability to survive on land came during the War of Darkness. It’s believed many powerful deities were once what we would classify as merfolk. Because of this many battles happened underwater, causing merfolk to leave their homes and practice spells to allow them to breath on land, which eventually became part of their biology.
Merfolk Culture
Merfolk have a closed, protective culture. It is hard for most other mortals to live underwater so they tend not to interact with other mortals for long periods of time. They are also divided by what god lives near the realm they inhabit. Merfolk have a few ways of communicating: they can speak language but also parts of their body glow to speak to one another. The amount of time a merfolk spends on land or in water will determine how well they use both languages. Some other mortals don’t like merfolk just for the fact that they managed to kill a god. The term Merfolk was given to them by the land mortals, as most of the population of Merfolk tend to stay underwater their true name is a pattern of light flashes that differ between the realms. Merfolk will tend to have an underwater name as well as an onland name.
Merfolk as Champions
Merfolk make great water champions as all the trails to become one happen underwater, Merfolk will also get requested to be the Space Champion since they have accuse over more lost temples then most.
Aquatic
Merfolk are able to live both on land and in water, meaning they can breathe underwater and use their full movement to swim. Additionally, merfolk can communicate non-verbally by glowing faintly.
